The Scarlet Knight’s women’s basketball suffered what was more than a disappointing hosting number 25th in the country Michigan State (19-7) at the RAC on Thursday night.
They lost 70-67, continuing the Lady Knights (16-11) struggles continue on the road and at home) after a dropping a game to a team they had a solid lead over all the way into the 4th quarter.
After coming out with a strong first half, things started to crumble as Rutgers lost its momentum. Sloppy plays happened on both sides of the ball offensively and defensively for both teams.
Fortunately for Michigan they were able to come out of top after playing badly the majority of the game.
Rutgers led at half time and also jumped to a 43-29 lead with less than six minutes to go in the third quarter. The combined total of both teams’ fouls was 44. Head coach C. Vivian Stringer was understandably frustrated with her team’s heartbreaking loss in the final minutes.
“We didn’t demonstrate composure, they did and we didn’t focus and we had some miscommunication…..in the fourth quarter we couldn’t seem to find them, and it was ridiculous.”
Michigan sophomore guard Lexi Gussert was a perfect a perfect 3-3 from the field and scored eight points in just 10 minutes.
Junior guard Tyler Scaife contributed 22 points, but her contribution wasn’t enough for the team to maintain control and come out on top.
Rutgers will have to out this game behind them and get ready to play number –Maryland on Sunday at 3pm.
